Today has been a great day!
Okay so initially I was in a bit of a flap because I forgot that Chloe Scadding was coming to give a talk today about her work as a mixed media textiles designer. I woke up early to see my boyfriend, Jackson, off but then an alert popped up on my phone telling me she would be in. AH!
So I dropped what I was doing (making delicious banana, mixed berry and coconut flour pancakes) and walked into uni. The walk itself is really pleasant and gave my mind some much needed clearing. HOWEVER, I live about 1 hour and 15 minutes from the campus and I left with only an hour to spare before the lecture. SO, needless to say, I pegged it.
I got there in time for the start and I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the talk.Chloe started by talking a little about what she does and then went into detail about what a typical day and contract is like. To clarify, Chloe works as a lecturer at a university and then designs and sells textiles as a freelancer. She manages all the work herself like chasing up and writing invoices and find a lot of the contracts herself. She initially had trouble in the beginning because her textiles were, wonderful don't get me wrong, but were too difficult to work with.
So, she toned down her style to be more workable in collections and began to get more and more work.
She explained to us that being a freelancer means that you have no guaranteed salary so it's best to have a job that you can use to pay the bills.
She now has an agent who sets up jobs for her and this is something that I should definitely look into as this sounds like a pretty sweet job. I, of course, would have another job on the side that could guarantee me a salary but this means that I can pay my bills and continue to produce creative work to boost my portfolio and keep my creative juices flowing!
So that was brilliant! It really boosted my confidence because I have been worry about keeping myself active in the industry whilst also managing to pay the bills.
This looks like a viable option for me definitely so I am going to work on that for sure as well as building a brand identity and designing and creating garments for sale.

Fashion Bloodhound
So about a month ago, I was thinking to myself that I was dying to build up the ratio of designer garments to Primark and realised that, on my income, that was likely to happen any time soon.
I wished to myself that there was somewhere that re-sold second hand designer gear at reduced prices so that I wasn't forced into the dimly lit, dodgy alleyway that was knockoffs. So I did a little searching but to no avail....
.....UNTIL!
I received an email from a colleague of the university, telling me that there was a job opening for the position of Online Fashion Assistant. I'm always looking for a jobs that spark my fashion driven personality so I imediately looked into it.
To my astonishment, not only was the position one that I have been asking the universe for but that the company iteself was one for the re-sale of designer goods.
Needless to say, I was ecstatic and have written them an excellent cover letter and forwarded them my CV.
Fingers crossed!!!
